Ideal Weight Calculator
Compare four height-based weight estimates and learn what the results mean
About You
Wrap your thumb and middle finger around your wrist. If they overlap: small. If they touch: medium. If they don't touch: large.
How this ideal weight calculator works
Enter your height in centimetres or feet and inches, choose the sex used by the formulas, and select a frame-size option. The calculator compares Devine, Robinson, Miller, and Hamwi estimates in kilograms and pounds. No account is required.
The range shown is the lowest to highest estimate across these four formulas. It is not a confidence interval or a personal target weight.
The four formulas
In the equations below, x is your height in inches minus 60 (the number of inches above 5 feet). Results are in kilograms. These are the rounded coefficients used by this calculator before its optional frame adjustment.
| Formula | Male | Female |
|---|---|---|
| Devine (1974) | 50 + 2.3 × x | 45.5 + 2.3 × x |
| Robinson (1983) | 52 + 1.9 × x | 49 + 1.7 × x |
| Miller (1983) | 56.2 + 1.41 × x | 53.1 + 1.36 × x |
| Hamwi (1964) | 48 + 2.7 × x | 45.5 + 2.2 × x |
These historical equations are closely related, but use different starting weights and height adjustments. Pai and Paloucek's review of their origins explains their relationship to older height–weight tables. Robinson and colleagues' original study describes deriving equations for drug-dosage calculations; that purpose does not make the result a recommended weight-loss goal.
Example: 170 cm, male, medium frame
170 cm is approximately 66.93 inches, so x is 6.93. The Devine calculation is 50 + (2.3 × 6.93), or about 65.9 kg. The other estimates are 65.2 kg (Robinson), 66.0 kg (Miller), and 66.7 kg (Hamwi). The displayed whole-kilogram range is 65–67 kg.
What does frame size change?
Medium leaves the formulas unchanged. In this tool, small multiplies every estimate by 0.9 and large multiplies it by 1.1. These adjustments and the wrist-overlap test are informal approximations, not clinically validated personalization. Selecting a frame size does not measure your body composition.
Is this my healthy weight or goal weight?
No single height-based estimate establishes that. These formulas do not assess muscle mass, pregnancy, medical history, or individual health. This tool only calculates for heights of at least 152.4 cm (5 feet) and is intended as an adult reference, not for children or medication dosing. A clinician can help interpret weight in your own circumstances.
A BMI calculation answers a different question by relating your current weight to height; it is also a screening measure, not a diagnosis. To explore estimated energy needs, use the calorie and TDEE calculator. You can then log meals and follow weight trends in CaloriePaper.
